RESCHEDULED
Oct 12: Tony Bennett at Granada Theater in Santa Barbara.
Opening Night Celebration! When Tony Bennett headlined Arts & Lectures’ fundraising gala in 2013, his dazzling, heartfelt performance, filled with panache, left the audience floating on air for months later... and many wishing they had been there. The legendary crooner returns to kick off the 2014-15 season in grand style. This 17-time Grammy winner had his first hit in 1951, and his albums continue to top the charts. With a husky, burnished voice and ebullient sense of swing, Tony is a priceless treasure whose expressive power is undimmed. Don’t miss this master whose interpretations have shaped the great American songbook. His daughter Antonia will perform an opening set of jazz/pop standards.

Tenor saxophonist Anton Schwartz continues to refine his composing and performing skills. A succinct tunesmith with a flair for accessible melodies that twist and turn in surprising ways, he is also a lyrical reedman with a gift for improvisation. He loves to change up grooves and moods from song to song, switching seamlessly from a New Orleans second line beat to a Monkish bop line, or to an Afro-Cuban groove, all the while demonstrating a genuine affinity for each. Schwartz’s riveting style balances equally between emotion, intellect, and intrigue. He celebrates the release of his fifth album, Flash Mob.

Cal Poly's University Jazz Bands Present 'Just Jazz'
March 15, 2014
Spanos Theatre, Cal Poly Campus, SLO, CA The challenge and excitement of improvisation will be on display by Cal Poly’s University Jazz Bands at their annual Just Jazz concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 15, in Spanos Theatre on campus.

“Expect the unexpected,” says Cal Poly Director of Jazz Studies Paul Rinzler. "Because jazz is improvised, even the musicians themselves can be surprised by what they come up with on the spur of the moment. Some of the best and most memorable moments from past University Jazz Band concerts have been things that no one could have imagined beforehand."

The concert will feature a wide range of jazz styles, from the traditional to the innovative. The program will include student compositions and pieces by great jazz masters. The blues, mainstream jazz, hip-hop, funk, and progressive styles will all be heard.

The bands will range in size from two big bands that have 18 musicians each to smaller, more intimate jazz combos.

Tickets to the concert are $12 for the public and $9 for students, senior citizens and Jazz Federation members. Pricing includes all Performing Arts Center fees, and event parking is now sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are sold at the Performing Arts Ticket office between noon and 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. To order by phone, call SLO-4TIX (756-4849).

The Music Department offers a 10 percent discount to patrons who buy season tickets to four of its events through the Performing Arts Ticket Office; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events.

The concert is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department, College of Liberal Arts, and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue

“Dizzying talent.” The Washington Post

New Orleans wunderkind Trombone Shorty (aka Troy Andrews) has rocketed into the public eye this past year – from closing the New Orleans Jazz Festival to appearing in a Lenny Kravitz documentary to lending his sassy music to a Nikon commercial starring Ashton Kutcher. The Grammy-nominated musician and his band, Orleans Avenue, know how to rile up a crowd with their infectious, high octane blend of tight funk, jazz-rock and slinky R&B – or, as they like to call it, “supafunkrock.” An “unstoppable force” (The New York Times) in today’s music scene, Shorty brings all the rock-star swagger with serious chops to back it up. Get ready for a brash and bold music party that’ll have you dancing in your seats.

Jazz Events: October and November 2013

What's happening in Jazz in SLO County?

SLO County Live Jazz!

One of our newest supporters asked us this week, "how can we find out everything happening around the County related to jazz and quality music?" Well, the answer isn't easy. Not everyone posts their events to KCBX, and not all events are listed in the New Times. Some organizations only publish a Facebook or website, and even those aren't always updated regularly. So, to help out, we thought we'd give you all a list and see how you like it. This is the best of our knowledge as to what's going on, but this list does not include all the blues bands, R&B bands, and private performances at wineries. It's just too much to keep track of without software. Perhaps in the future, we'll create a program. (An idea for a jazz grant or donation?) But there's some great stuff happening, and some incredibly good bands - including a festival - so here it is, we'd like to advise you of some exciting jazz events happening around the County in the month of October/November.

Last Sundays Jazz Jam - a SLO Jazz Festival event - Scott Andrews, SLO Jazz Festival President, as well as sax man for Burning James and the Funky Flames and leader of Black Market Trio, will host the Last Sundays Jazz Jam -- always held the last Sunday of the month (thus the name) - at the Shell Cafe on Price Street in Pismo Beach. The jam will be starting at 4:00PM and lasts until about 7:00PM this month (new hours for Fall/Winter). Musicians - bring yo' ax! Jazz lovers, you'll experience a mix of jazz. You just never know who might show up to jam, and that's the excitement of it. We'll cover from bossa to latin to afro to jazz funk. Shell Cafe offers a full menu, beer, and wine, and last we heard they do not charge a corkage fee. Come join the fun - SUNDAY, October 27, 2013 - bring a group of friends with you!

Cuesta College:
15th Annual Vocal Jazz Festival Concerts

The Four Freshman
Friday & Saturday, Nov. 1&2, 8:00 pm
SLO Campus, CPAC Main Stage

"Bug" Concert
Friday, Nov. 8, 7:30 pm
SLO Campus, CPAC Experimental Theater

The Cuesta College Jazz Orchestra
Friday, Nov.22, 7:30 pm
SLO Campus, CPAC Main Stage
Learn more at their website: http://www.cuesta.edu/student/forstudents/performingarts/

Cuesta College Jazz and the SLO Jazz Federation also promote a jam happening at Linnea's on Thursdays from either 7 - 9PM or 8 - 10PM. Last we heard, James Gallardo, bassist, was anchoring the rhythm section. The next one is TONIGHT.

BLUES SOCIETY SHOW:
The SLO Blues Society is back this Saturday with an enjoyable performance by local band Back Bay Betty, who will open at 8PM, followed by Candye Kane, this Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the SLO Vets Hall on 801 Grand Avenue in San Luis Obispo. Members $17, General Admission is $20. This show is 21 and over.

Voodoo Boogaloo - There's an exciting Halloween event being produced by Burning James and the Funky Flames, called the Voodoo Boogaloo - a Who Dat Halloween Party. Tickets are $22, it's at the Vets Hall with doors at 6PM and concert at 7PM. Costume prizes, fun, and benefiting the Noor Foundation, this concert will feature the band, food from Bon Temps Creole Cafe, and special guest performances, including Joe Pilloud from Big Daddy's Blues Band, Carol Wood, with vocal pyrotechnics rivaling Aretha Franklin, and Jimi Macon, formerly with the Gap Band and James Brown.

Charlie Shoemake, a Central Coast Legend on Vibes and also a prominent jazz educator, maintains the former Jazz at the Hamlet series at D'Anbino Winery. This is one of the few clubs offering jazz on the Central Coast, and we encourage you to attend their shows. You will typically find them every other Sunday, including November 3, with guitarist Frank Potenza and Luther Hughes on bass. On November 17, for a 4PM show only, the showcase will be a tribute to jazz educators, including Ron McCarley, Director of Jazz Studies at Cuesta College, saxophonist, and Paul Rinzler, Director of Jazz Studies at Cal Poly, pianist, along with other colleagues. I wouldn't be surprised to see Darrell Voss, Dylan Johnson on bass, etc., for that show, which ought to be very good. The shows there run $15 or $20 for both. Learn more about that jazz series at http://www.talsanmusic.com/rsvp.html.

NEED MORE CLUBS for LIVE JAZZ!

Speaking of which, if you're friends with night club, art cafe, restaurant, and other venue owners encourage them to have LIVE JAZZ - duos, solo pianists, trios, quartets. We need more venues for our local musicians to play, don't you agree? Help spread the word!

Basin Street Regulars Present Jubilee by the Sea 24-27 October 2013 American Music, Big Band, Swing, and Dixieland Jazz, 20 of California and America’s Finest Bands with Special Guests in 5 Venues In and Around PISMO BEACH, All Event and single day tickets available; E-mail orders to sandysmallwood@charter.net (805)773-3750, (805) 481-7840 or www.pismojazz.com. Jubilee by the Sea. Local favorites include the Basin Street Regulars and Red Skunk Band, along with Cal Poly Jazz Band, Hancock College Jazz Band, and the Cuesta Jazz Orchestra - which I believe is the night band directed by Warren Balfour, which we just heard two weeks ago out at Cuesta and they were SMOKIN' HOT. We recommend this jazz festival highly. What works out great on the schedule is you can attend the Pismo Jubilee and then swing over to Shell Cafe in Pismo at 4PM for our own Jazz Jam on Sunday. The Jubilee runs from Friday through Sunday starting TOMORROW.  Get information about tickets here: http://pismojazz.com/JubileeByTheSea.htm.

This ought to be a mid-week show worth attending, for sure. http://events.sanluisobispo.com/san_luis_obispo_ca/events/show/361021603-charlie-hunter-scott-amendola

For our part, our organization is busy planning events surrounding the first SLO Jazz Festival, May 17, 2014, in Mission de Tolosa San Luis Obispo.
