FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jazz Festival Coming to SLO in 2009A new music festival is coming to the Central Coast to infuse life into SLO's music and dance culture.November 2, 2007 -- A new and exciting festival is coming to the downtown scene in San Luis Obispo in Summer, 2009 (revised launch date 2011). The SLO Jazz Festival (www.SLOJazzFest.org) is going to be an exciting opportunity for SLO to expand its reach beyond SLO to include touring musicians and bands from Northern and Southern California, and eventually around the world. The objective of festival organizers is to bring a multiple stage festival that combines the world of musicians, dancers, artists, and local restaurants, vendors, stores, wineries, and community members into a worldwide community event that will attract high-class talent and people into our beautiful community to share the incredible music being fostered and grown here as a major tourist attraction. Local jazz musician and band leader, Scott Andrews (www.myspace.com/body), noticed that many major cities in California have wonderful music festivals happening on an annual basis. Monterey, Sacramento, San Jose, San Francisco, North Beach, Fillmore Street, Newport, and other areas in California have thriving jazz festivals that are growing attractions for those cities. "Why not here in SLO?" is the question Mr. Andrews asked that inspired the idea for a SLO Jazz Festival. Corporations seeking to recruit from Cal Poly, SLO, will gain exposure through sponsoring the festival. In addition, Andrews foresees the local wineries gaining a benefit from more exposure to tourists from Northern and Southern California, as well as restaurants and businesses expanding their visibility to people in and out of SLO County. As something most other jazz festivals are just beginning to experiment with, Andrews wants the music to be an outreach for artists, and combine art jams with free music jams. It could get interesting, to say the least. Andrews also wants the music to be educational, and give back to the community opportunities to learn and grow through such diverse music as salsa, world-beat (afro, reggae, Latin), funk, blues, spoken-word, straight-ahead, beyond jazz, and swing jazz. Andrews cares about the educational aspect, as he grew up in the rich jazz programs at Arroyo Grande High School (Lee Statom & Bob Tessatore), Cuesta College (Warren Balfour), and later Cal Poly. Andrews points out "You know, even middle schools, like Mesa Middle School, are getting more involved in jazz these days. Morro Bay High School has an incredibly rich jazz program. SLO, Atascadero, Paso, Santa Maria, A.G., Cuesta, Cal Poly -- all of these schools, and more, are developing some very talented young musicians who need an outlet for more education, playing experience, and exposure to leading musicians in this dynamic field of music." Festival coordinators are seeking additional sponsors, volunteers, and music groups to help make the festival a success.
