2014 MERCEDES-BENZ SLO JAZZ FESTIVAL
presented by ALFANO MOTORCARS
On the MISSION STAGE (Main Stage):
PONCHO SANCHEZ AND HIS LATIN JAZZ BAND
8:15pm - 10pm at the MISSION STAGE (MAIN STAGE) of the SLO JAZZ FESTIVAL MAY 17, 2014
For more than three decades as both a leader and a sideman, conguero Poncho Sanchez has stirred up a fiery stew of straightahead jazz, gritty soul music, and infectious melodies and rhythms from a variety of Latin American and South American sources. His influences are numerous, including some of the best Latin Jazz artists in history.
If music were about pictures, percussionist Poncho Sanchez’s music would best be described as a kaleidoscopic swirl of some of the hottest colors and brightest lights to emerge from either side of the border. At any given show, on any given record, fragments of Latin jazz, swing, bebop, salsa and other infectious grooves collide and churn in a fiery swirl, with results that are no less than dazzling. Sanchez grew up in a suburb of L.a., where he was raised on an unusual cross section of sounds that included straight ahead jazz, Latin jazz and American soul. By his teen years, his musical consciousness had been solidified by the likes of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaria, Wilson Pickett and James Brown. Whatever the genre, the mesmerizing array of sounds and colors from Poncho Sanchez’s youth have telegraphed across the decades and continue to inform his creative sensibilities to this day. his over 20 year relationship with Concord Records has yielded two dozen recordings, a Grammy award and several Grammy nominations.
There are few bands that rival Poncho Sanchez and His Latin Jazz Band, and we're thrilled to present this fine enjoyable and danceable music at our main stage in the 2014 SLO Jazz Festival!

Téka & NewBossa on the Main Stage at SLO Jazz Festival
(Brazilian Vocalist and Guitarist)
http://www.newbossa.com/biography/
Téka is an artist with roots firmly planted in the traditions of Brazilian music…the samba, bossa nova, and choro. From an early age, she fell under the spell of American Jazz and began soaking up the sounds of the jazz greats of the day.
Today, her music has become a fusion of the sensual rhythms and harmonies of Brazil with the sophistication and improvisation of Jazz, which she calls New Bossa. After graduating in Music Education from Sao Paulo University, Téka studied at Boston’s Berklee College of Music.
Her new release, July 2013’s, “So Many Stars,” is a definitive statement that she is now a mature, world-class artist. Her decision to use the minimum backing, bass and percussion, with her vocals and guitar, adding only a single solo instrument -- trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass flute, or guitar -- to each song, results in a marvelously intimate CD which shows her warm, nuanced voice to advantage.

"What happens when you take some of the county’s best musicians, give them plenty of time to develop their sound and let their creativity flow, and finally let them take their time in the studio perfecting their music? You get Human Nation’s debut CD Migration, a world-class, world-music-inflected jazz collection that should put this talented group on the national map.
Founded in 2009 by guitarist-composer Adam Levine, the super group also features Danny Pelfrey on saxes, Brett Mitchell on piano, Bill Wingfield on bass, and Dean Giles on drums and percussion. Early on, before leaving for a teaching gig in Florida, the group also featured David Becker, who appears on the album." -- Glen Starkey - New Times

From inspirations of love and love Lost comes one of the most enjoyable groups out of the central coast of California, The Tipsy Gypsies, featuring the lovely Hilary Langdon on vocals, Guitar player Forrestt Williams, Violinist Allan Dick, drummer Isaac Laing, and Double Bassist Brian Lanzone. These are the best musicians the area has to offer, but the chemistry the Tipsy Gypsies has during their packed live performances is greater than the sum of its parts. The Tipsy Gypsies play a style of music that is rooted in Gypsy Jazz, like Django Reinhardt, and inspired by Billie Holiday, but updated with modern influences like the vocal stylings of Feist and Portishead.
“Sultry Hilary Langdon, whose high and arresting voice fills the band’s narrative songs with added drama, fronts the Tipsy Gypsies. Chief songwriter and guitarist Forrestt Williams, …delivers plenty of sparkling guitar work in the spirit of Django Reinhardt.” – Glen Starkey, New Times Music Writer, San Luis Obispo
