SLO Jazz Festival is sponsoring two films at the SLO IFF: Nathan East Co-sponsored by SLO Jazz Festival & Films for Good/Bob & Christine Williams Whether you’re a fan, or have no idea who Nathan East is, you’ll enjoy this behind-the-scenes look into the career of one of the most influential bass players in modern music. While recording his first solo album last November, this making-of documentary was also part of the mix. Little did East know he would end up starring in a full-blown fascinating film chronicling his career from a wide-eyed 16-year-old touring with Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra to Grammy Award-winning session player for Daft Punk, Beyoncé, Barbra Streisand, Eric Clapton and more. Includes interviews with colleagues Phil Collins, Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, and many more. USA. 85 min. Nathan East will attend the Thursday afternoon screening. In 2011, we did a fundraiser at STAX Wine Bar in Morro Bay for God's Havens for Children, a children's foster care agency, and SLO Jazz Festival This event has taken place. We raised over $300 for God's Havens for Children and SLO Jazz Festival with a "SOLD OUT" party! And the music was simply sublime!
In 2009, Festival Founder Scott Andrews and Matt Clark Tile and Stone through a Funk Festival in SLO. This event featured multiple bands, and for posterity sake, we're glad it's behind us! It was a windy day - Scott's folks stayed in the car it was so miserable. Fortunately, for the die-hard funk fans who weathered it out, they were treated to several awesome sets of funk music by local favorite bands. Everyone who attended received a groovy funky t-shirt and a CD single by local funk band, BODY: It's not every day you see a band playing bad bad funk with a singer singing through a megaphone, the band in space suits, with movies about space shuttles on a big wall behind them. Yep, that really happened! Far out, right?
Who knows what the next SLO FUNK FESTIVAL will be like?! We are considering bringing back a funk festival in the future, after we get the 2014 Jazz Festival under our belts. Stay tuned... ! |
