Court Street Summer Jazz Returns:

Picture
2019 Court Street Summer Jazz:

We are incredibly thrilled to present the 2019 COURT STREET SUMMER JAZZ, sponsored by the San Luis Obispo Collection. This Jazz series presents some of the finest local jazz groups for your entertainment experience and is curated by the SLO Jazz Festival. The location is again at the Court Street terrace upstairs by Pottery Barn, Chico’s and Sephora. Some seating is provided and lawn chairs are also allowed at this free mall jazz series (please don’t block store entrances, stairways, or the elevator). The series runs every other Saturday from June 8 through September 14, 2019, with each show from 12:30pm - 2:30pm.

Featured groups include phenomenal original contemporary jazz by Joe Duran Group; The SLO Four comprised of standout college students; Judith & Her Jazz Krewe, bringing New Orleans trad jazz for the first time to Court Street; the always impressive Cuesta Jazz All-Stars, which includes Cuesta Faculty; recent Monterey Jazz Fest local sax hero’s Dave Becker Central Coast All-Stars; award-winning bassist and Cal Poly alumni James Gallardo Trio; G2 Project, pop jazz keyboardist George Garcia is joined by Darrell Voss and Gary Drysdale; then closes out with local all-stars Black Market Trio, led by SLO Jazz Festival’s Founder & Executive Director Scott Andrews, who performs songs from New Orleans to Havana, Cuba.

The series this year is dedicated to prominent local artist John Landon, who passed away this past August. Landon is well-known for his colorful paintings of many local Central Coast establishments, murals, and the artwork for each of the posters and backdrop for SLO JAZZ FESTIVAL. The cover artwork for 2019 Court Street Summer Jazz is by Landon, with poster design by Barry Goyette.

6th Annual SLO Summer Jazz Workshop

6TH ANNUAL SLO SUMMER JAZZ WORKSHOP DETAILS:

STUDENTS: don't miss the opportunity to sign up for the Summer Jazz Workshop! This education experience has grown from 12 students to over 30 students over the past five years. This year special guest instructors include Terry Lawless, keyboardist for the Irish Rock Group, U2; John Worley, Yamaha-endorsed master trumpeter and educator from Stanford University; and Wally Schnalle, drummer often featured in Drum Magazine and the current Director of San Jose Summer Jazz Workshop. The SLO Summer Jazz Workshop is directed by Ron McCarley, Director of Jazz Studies at Cuesta College, and is assisted by Darrell Voss, local educator, drummer, and pianist.

To learn more about this year's special guest instructors, click here.

The SLO Summer Jazz Workshop, a collaborative production with Community Programs, Cuesta Jazz, and SLO Jazz Festival, is now a 5-day performance course aimed at students from Junior High through College. Each student will be instructed as to the role his/her instrument plays in a jazz ensemble. Students will also be instructed in the importance of competence on their instrument as well as how to dress and come across on the bandstand.

Stage presence and team spirit will also be covered as well as how to acquire club dates and how to charge for a performance. In other words, students will be taught how to earn money as a musician if that is what the student so chooses.
This summer’s workshop participants will be divided into two separate groups: “Jazz Master Class” and “Anyone Can Improvise.” The two groups will participate jointly in some exercises, but will have focused time each day for specialized lessons based on their skill level. We most certainly were not disappointed by : JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA with Wynton Marsalis, who brought his "SPACES" Suite, a music and dance exploration, to the Performing Arts Center at Cal Poly on September 27, 2018. The show was produced by Cal Poly Arts, and we were thrilled they are bringing jazz of this stature to SLO.

Trumpet master Wynton Marsalis once again led this remarkable and hip orchestra, celebrating 30 years as America’s premier jazz ensemble. Marsalis’ acclaimed new suite, Spaces, combines street dance (jookin’) and tap dance with Big Band jazz in a playful and wildly entertaining exploration of the animal kingdom. Featuring dancers Lil Buck and Jared Grimes.

Herb Alpert & Lani Hall
Sat, Jan 26, 2019 8:00 PM
We saw this show at San Jose Jazz Festival and it brought back so many great memories and songs by Herb Alpert (formerly Tijuana Brass) and Lani Hall, who performs an entire set dedicated to her days with Sergio Mendes. Creator and innovator, musician and producer, artist and philanthropist Herb Alpert is a man with profound passions – and a list of platinum hits: “The Lonely Bull,” “A Taste of Honey,” “Rise,” and “This Guy’s in Love with You,” to name just a few. But at his core, Alpert’s main passion is his wife – Grammy Award-winning vocalist and former lead singer with Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66, Lani Hall.
You won't want to miss this fabulous show.

Court Street Summer Jazz is BACK!

This fabulous jazz series featuring some of the finest local jazz musicians and bands is located near Pottery Barn and Sephora at the TERRACE above Court Street near Osos Street and Higuera Street in downtown San Luis Obispo. Each show takes place EVERY OTHER SATURDAY starting at 12:30PM and lasting until 2:30PM.

This week features CHORO de OURO, headed by guitarist Grant Chase and Cuesta Director of Jazz Studies Ron McCarley, who performs on Soprano sax and flute with Choro de Ouro. You may recall that this fine Brazilian music called "Choro" is the music from Brazil that predicated the Bossa Nova movement. The music is upbeat and highly enjoyable and relaxing -- perfect to enjoy on a Saturday afternoon. We've had Choro de Ouro perform at each of our Court Street Summer Jazz Series and at the 2017 SLO Jazz Festival. Here is a video of them at Court Street in 2011:

https://www.facebook.com/SLOJazzFestival/videos/10150336946687059/

Other events around the County this July

There are many shows happening this weekend, including the Tipsy Gypsies tonight at Concerts in the Plaza (happening as I write this). Charlie Shoemake has a fabulous concert up in Cambria on Sunday:

Also on Sunday for those in the North County you may want to check out Marshall Otwell at the jazz brunch they have at La Consecha. Matthew Evans on wood bass, Marshall on keyboards, and Darrell Voss on drums. It's a *great* place for brunch and a whole bunch of nice people come in to hear some Sunday jazz!  What could be better?

They play three sets starting at 11:30a and finishing at 2:30p.  La Cosecha is at 835 12th Street in Paso (on the park, look for the blue awning).

Wednesday at the Manse - Live JAZZ!
Last, check out the Manse for some fun jazz!

Jazz Band Summer Concert
Wednesday, July 25 at 6:30 pm
Savor Cajun style snacks while the “Crustacea Jazz Band” entertains us with their upbeat, humorous, swinging tunes in the New Orleans jazz style. In this “old fashioned” Jazz, the players will improvise around a familiar melody line resulting in a fun time for the audience where dancing and singing along are encouraged. Crustacea’s repertoire showcases this original music, as well as spirituals and gospel music, blues, and early pop tunes--all played in the New Orleans jazz style – an American Original!

Of course, every Wednesday at the Seaventure in Pismo Beach they have Jazz, usually from about 7PM - 9PM. The last time we dropped in it was Dylan Johnson with Karl on sax. It was quite enjoyable.

This month's Pismo Jazz Sunday Session is featuring Ulysses Jasz Band from Santa Barbara on July 29 from 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Jam Session starts at 11:00 a.m. Always held at the Pismo Beach Veterans’ Memorial Building – 780 Bello Street
Cost - $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Silver Members are free.

You'll often see our Director, Scott Andrews, performing at the 3rd jam session to keep his Dixieland chops up. If you play, bring your axe and join in on the jam - it's a lot of fun!
